Manado is spectacular diving. The protected National Marine Park Bunaken is especially famous for its steep drop offs. The walls go down hundreds of meters and are covered with pristine, healty coral. Visibility varies from 15 to over 30 meters, and fish life is abundant. I have been around but I really can't say different than that Manado is a must for every diver. If you think the Red Sea is special, you should come here! Big stuf but also small critters as frogfish, ghost pipe fish, (pygmee) seahorses, mimic octopus. It is too much to mention!! During the trips to the dive spots I saw on many occasions, huge herds of dolphins, all kinds and also pilot whales. It seems that sperm whales and orca's are seen as well, but on my visit I did not spot them. Next time..... Because for sure I will come back! Apart from diving you can do a few other things. Manado's hinterland offers active volcano hikes, cultural landtours, white water rafting and rain forrest excursions. All could be done in daytrips from the resort I was staying. It was not so difficult to get here. In the high season (April-November) there are 4 flights a week from S'pore to Manado. Flying to S'pore first, is at the moment the best route. You can also fly to Jakarta but than there are no direct flights to Manado and you have to go from island to island (via Bali or Makassar)
