A typical small, remote island. Beautiful setting and an ideal getaway location. Mobiles don't work and there is just enough electricity for lights, TV (for all those football matches) and the fridge. You can walk along the beachfront, but not that far. The island is small, hilly and jungly and not much else to do but dive and relax. As it is on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, the time to go is during the northwest monsoon season - ie from about Feb to about September.

I travelled on an organised trip that left a Singapore dive shop at 7pm. We travelled by coach across the causeway, into Malaysia. After a stop at a fuel station for cheap bites to eat (and also cheap fuel), we headed to Mersing, on the east coast of Malaysia. From there we took the slow ferry to Pulau Aur - about 4 hours. Plenty of opporunity to sleep. You cannot fly there.

Briefing upon arrival, followed by another opportunity to sleep in the dormitories (largely empty when I went).

Dive sites were very close and reached by day boat. Good fish life, some nice corals (though not really in the shallows) and some easy dives round the two islands.

Aside from the attack by the feisty trigger fish, I had a lot of fun. Diving quality OK, visibility very good. I travelled in early March 2005.
