Morat is a small island separated by a channel from the eastern tip of the island of Roatan. Diving off the island can be reached by day boat from Roatan. Some Roatan West End dive centres offer day trips to Morat when conditions are good and enough people want to go. From West End, it takes about two hours by boat to reach the dive sites off Morat. Being at the east tip of Roatan, the Morat would be more quickly reached from Roatan accommodations on that side of the island.

A trip to Morat Island is well worth it. The area is not dived very frequently, so the reef is in great shape and you're nearly guaranteed to have the reef to yourself. Since there are few, if any, mooring lines, the dive 'sites' are relative -- a good location is spotted by eye from the boat and you jump in. One of the pleasures of diving Morat is that there are few 'dive plans' to follow other than the current, the wall as a guide, and your air time, as few sites have been mapped.

Boats can anchor for lunch and a surface interval at Pigeon Quay, a small uninhabited postcard-perfect sandbar island between Morat and Roatan. Well worth swim out to the island in the crystal turquoise waters.

Try to catch a trip out to Morat if you can, especially before the mooring lines pop up, sites get mapped, and the pleasure of diving an unexplored location fades away.
