Dived here in July 2005, but only had time for a couple of dives out of San Jose. However first impressions are very good.
The diving itself. Undersea the reefs are an extension of the volcanic hills that make up much of Cabo de Gata, lots of gullies and overhangs and caves to probe. Water and reefs are very clean - it is a reserve so no drifting plastic bags or discarded fishing line. Diverse marine life - groupers, octopus, morays, wrasse, damsel fish, a few small medusae, plus the usual anemones, urchins, starfish and sea cucumbers.
Didn't see any big ones, but that may be a reflection of the few sites we visited.
There was a strong onshore breeze while we were there, so viz was reduced to about 15m, but we were told that under better conditions larger pelagics can be seen in the blue.
Water temp in early July was 22C, so 5mm wetsuit was quite adequate (at least for me!)

San Jose itself is an attractive small town within Cabo de Gata with an assorment of hotels and restaurants and is about 30-40 mins drive from Almeria Airport on good roads.
Several UK airlines fly to Almeria inc BA, RyanAir and EasyJet and all the usual car hire companies are available at the airport
There are (I believe) three dive operation in San Jose and we dived with AlphaBuceo (email base@alphabuceo.com).

Dives run (at least) three times per day - 09:30, 11:00 and 16:00. The 16:00 dives tended to be trainees and snorkellers and as we were staying some distance away we didn't make the first dives of the day, so were doing the later ones at 6-14m. Next time we'll stay in San Jose and do the morning dive as well.
