May 2005 My name is Hans and I was diving with Greenwich Diving in May. It was not the first time with Greenwich Diving but this time was even better then befor. As always Jan and Eduard helped me wherever they could and tryed everything to make me happy. It was already quiet bussy and the other divers was from everywhere in Europe. As they have promised last year they have bought a new diveboat. It is just perfect! The water quality was better then last year and we was able to see sting rays and Sun Fish. So, I only can recommend this Dive Center because they are just the Nš 1 on the Costa Blanca.

October 2004 The 1st time I visited Calpe, diving with Les Basetes Dive Centre, was in October. The weather was good - hot enough to enjoy without sweltering in the sun, not too busy on the beaches, the water was warm enough for an hour's dive in a shortie or 5mm wetsuit, and the diving was great, so good in fact I returned in April 2005. Slightly colder in the water this time, but Les Basetes dive centre provided the right advice about which suit to wear, and I still did an hour's dive. It was really interesting seeing the difference 6 months later, in October there were lots of fish, octopus and eels, whereas in April the emphasis was more on the underwater topography. I also completed my Rescue and Nitrox on both trips, and can highly recommend Les Basetes for scuba instruction. There is a sheltered harbour right next to the dive centre for confined water training and a gentle shallow area for newbies or snorkellers. Its possible to hire everything out there from BCDs and wetsuits to fins, even underwater scooters!!! I really enjoyed both my trips to Calpe and am sure to return to dive with Les Basetes.

April 2005 Most of the dives I did were in the 6-17m range which meant over an hour each dive! Sea temp was around 16 degrees C. I'm not a fish spotter so can't give good advice on what I saw other than scorpionfish, octopus and moray eels. The fish life was abundant and on one dive saw no fewer than 4 octopus. We did a night dive as well which showed up Scorpionfish in abundance. The cavern dives were a real exprience as I hadn't done one before now. Although the fish life is fairly low you don't seem to miss them as there is so much natural architecture to view. Entering into one cavern there is a whole in the roof through which a shaft of sunlight illuminates a flat rock like an altar of sacrifice to Poseidon. That might seem a dramatic statement but it really was that incredible! The water quality was as good as many places I have been (Turkey, Cyprus, Mauritius). Les Basetes, under new ownership, is an excellent choice for diving with and Del and Viv go out of their way to make you feel at home. Del is an excellent skipper and Instructor and provides highly informative and interesting pre-dive briefings. Nothing is left to chance. Luc and Ron are also great assets to this dive business as they possess a wealth of information with many years diving in the area. Viv runs the shop and is an organisational genius having recommended and booked our accomodation as well as handling all the dive bookings. Les Basettes is slightly off the beaten track but the instructions provided were easy to follow and very precise. The accomodation was to a high standard with all mod cons and a DVD player in the lounge! The area has many bars and restaurants. The food and drink is ridiculously cheap and yet still fairly good quality. The beach is clean and wasn't overcrowded (but then it was April). I didn't go with family so never experienced the provisions for children but I believe that there is a lot for kids as well. The drive from Alicante to Calpe was straightforward and took 55minutes. Viv's instructions proving very precise again! Car hire (again recommended by Viv) was cheap, the car was safe and fairly new. I'm looking forward to going back again hopefully later this year.
