A great destination for divers and holidaymakers alike, Sharm is located on the southern-most tip of the Sinai peninsular.
Sharm is a sophisticated resort with an array of bars, discos, restaurants and shops. Souks come alive at night selling Egyptian produce such as gold, silver, spices, cotton, leather and countless Tutenkamun trinkets. Be prepared to barter!
The surrounding mountains (2642 meters high) form part of the mountain range stretching from deep in Saudi Arabia, across the Sinai and the African continent and provides a stunning backdrop to the resort. On a drive through these desert mountains you will undoubtedly come across roaming camels and nomadic Bedouin – and then there are the enterprising Bedouin who have set up ‘roadside cafes’ – such as Bedouin Bob's – in the middle of nowhere!
Approximately two and a half hours from Sharm is one of the most spectacular sites in all of the Sinai … St Catherine’s Monastery. Situated at the foot of Mount Sinai, it is said this is where Moses encountered the burning bush and where God revealed the Ten Commandments. Many people climb Mount Sinai to marvel at the spectacular sunrise and to then visit the Monastery. Dating back to the sixth century, the Monastery houses numerous works of art - its collection of illuminated manuscripts is the second largest after the Vatican.
Sharm’s main resort is Naama Bay with a clean, sweeping beach, hotels, shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Many hotels have their own private beach and for non-divers there are water sports, trips to Ras Mohammed National Park, camel rides and the chance to enjoy a traditional Bedouin meal, as well as St Catherine’s Monastery.
The whole atmosphere of the resort is both friendly and relaxed.
