While in the UK I was sadly searching the internet and going through old copies of dive magazines trying to find any information on the Great Barrier Reef but it wasn't until I arrived in Cairns where all the huge livaboards depart from the excitement of the next 5 days hit me. Cairns is the capital of northern Queensland and is a the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns itself is a Lively, Commercial City and is a Divers dream. The Great Barrier Reef is undisputed as one of the world’s most important natural assets. It is the largest natural feature on earth stretching more than 2,300km along the northeast coast of Australia from the northern tip of Queensland to just north of Bundaberg. The Reefs accessable from Cairns are the Ribbin Reefs of which some of the best dives sites are Cod Hole where most livaboards will organize a Giant Cod Feed and Osprey Reef where you can see Sharks in every direction feeding off Giant Tuna heads. Further South from Cairns a three hour drive is Townsville a smaller town which is well worth a visit if only to dive the Yongala considered to be one of the top ten wrecks in the world.
