Why are the Poor Knights So Good?

The Poor Knights Islands offer the best sub-tropical diving in the world.

Jacques Cousteau ranked the Poor Knights as one of the top ten sites, anywhere.
Prestigious United Kingdom “Diver” magazine ranks them the “best sub-tropical diving in the world.”

23 km off the north east coast of New Zealand, the Poor Knights Islands are washed by a warm current that sweeps down from the Coral Sea. Water temperatures are warmer and visibility is clearer than on the New Zealand Coast. The Islands have volcanic origins that provide a myriad of spectacular drop-offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels. This complex underwater landscape results in a unique environment in which subtropical and temperate marine life co-exist with extraordinary diversity, beauty and density. From wrasses to morays, triple fins to nudibranchs, over 125 species of fish. From soft corals to encrusting sponges, from vibrant anemones to ecklonia kelp forests, from hundreds of mating sting rays to gorgonian fans, from sandy bottoms to wall drop offs, there is always something else to see.

A dive at the Poor Knights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience; very different to coral reef diving or diving on the New Zealand Coast. The Islands are a total marine reserve, allowing the fullest proliferation of nature’s underwater wonderland. Every thing is alive, thriving and colourful. No matter what your previous diving experience, you will be enthralled.
