The Cavalli Islands are situated on the east coast of New Zealand's north island and just 20 miles from the iconic Bay of Islands. The islands offer diving conditions similar to those experienced at the Poor Knights group some 40 miles to the south. The Cavalli group is home to the famous Rainbow Warrior, the Greenpeace vessel which was blown up by French secret service agents in 1985. Dive companies based in the Bay of Islands offer daily trips to the wreck site, usually combining the wreck dive with a reef dive on the journey back. Fish species are prolific in amongst the kelp forests and sponge gardens.

The best time to dive this area is October - April when the dive companies operate virtually every day. Average water temperature at this time of the year is 20-22C. Tours also operate on demand throughout the year.
