Plymouth has historic ties with the sea, with a strong naval tradition which continues to this day. The Mayflower left for America from here and two navies have been sunk by storms in Plymouth Sound.

From a diving perspective, Plymouth isn't called the Diving Capital for nothing. With lots of Dive shops, Dive schools and Dive boats servicing the diving industry, there is always somewhere to go. Most boats have lifts and Technical Diving is very popular here. There are many wrecks to chose from including the Scylla, an 'artificial reef' made by sinking an old naval warship. Plymouth is also blessed with some very interesting shore dives, some going straight down to 45-50m. Visibility is probably best around October but it varies from week to week dependant on the rain, tides and wind... UK diving is not about guaranteed 30m viz and Plymouth is no exception!

There is a lot of sealife here and there are regular 'Seasearch' dives where species are logged by volunteer divers - just ask at the diveshops and they will tell you if they run them. You will see thornback rays, flatfish (sole, plaice etc), crab, scallops and lobster at most of the shore dives and you will see large shoals of pelagics on some of the wreck dives.

Plymouth hosts the National Marine Aquarium which is excellent and has lots of other places to visit. There is a lot of nightlife, and many bars and restaurants to choose from.
