Kilkee is located on the west coast of Ireland and contains some of the best diving the country has to offer.
Diving in Kilkee is never a dull moment as there is nearly always somewhere to dive, whatever the weather.
Most of the sites in the area are accessed from Kilkee harbour which houses Kilkee diving centre as well as its own slip if you wish to bring your own boat.
The centre is well equipped with changing rooms and showers and there is even a coffee shop.
The lads are very friendly and the shop sells a good range of equipment.
The most commonly dived sites in the area are Middle Rock and Outer Rock which are exellent wall dives with some stunning features and varied marine life.
Georges head is another great site which, when dived in the summer often has very large shols of mackrel to get lost in.
Another classic is Donegal Point which takes you through a tunnel cut into the cliffs which surround the area. There is air above you at all times in the cave which takes about ten minutes to swim through, and when you exit, you will encounter some great scenery with smooth walls of the cave and a small kelp forest straight in front. Look up now and you will see the large pollack which frequent all the sites in Kilkee. Follow the wall around to the left and you will see some of the most colourful coral polyps anywhere and this will bring you back to the entrance of the cave where you started.
On most of the dives in KIlkee you can expect to see lobsters, spider crabs, crayfish, congers, pollock and the colourfull cuckoo wrasse which tend to follow you around.
The town of Kilkee has plenty of post dive entertainment with loads of pubs and restaurants, the favourite with divers being the Greyhound (or skinny dog to the regulars).
When you visit Kilkee, don't go home without taking a walk along the cliffs. The view is spectacular but don't get too close to the edge!!
Travelling to Kilkee is very easy. By road take the N7 and follow the signs for Limerick. From there, follow the signs for Ennis, then follow the signs for Kilkee. The journey time from Dublin is 3 1/2 - 4 hours.
By air, fly to Shannon which is less than an hour from Ennis.
I would recommend diving in Kilkee to anyone. I personally try to visit 2 or 3 times a year.
Give it a try!!!
