Scapa Flow in the Orkneys was the home of the main Atlantic Operations HQ for the First and Second World War with the base at Lyness, It is, however, what lies below the waves that makes it a premier place for divers.

On 21st June 1919 the entire German Imperial Navy's High Sea Fleet was scuttled to avoid it falling into the hands of the British. Unfortunately only 8 of the original 74 great warships are still there due to salvage work but magnificent they are! Three 26,000 ton battleships, four 5000 ton light cruisers and a 900 ton destroyer. Over the years many other wrecks have succumbed to Scapa so theres plenty to see. Dive depths are between 16 - 45 metres although there are deeper ones for the Trimix divers. The two war graves HMS Royal Oak and Vanguard are designated sites and local laws prohibit diving within 100 metres of them.

I found the boat skippers and their mates to be mines of information and the locals are very friendly.
