Komodo, is one of the worlds premier diving destinations. It is a listed world heritage area and national park, and marine park.

Clear (30Meter+) warmer waters (Avg 27C) in the north favour hard coral reef formation and sightings for pelagic's and wide angle photography. The cooler (Avg23C) nutrient rich waters that well up deep from the indian ocean prevail in the south and favour the growth of soft corals and result in stunning concentrations of coral and invertebrate life, such as that found on the famous Cannibal Rock. This area favours macro photography. This rare combination of environments allows for the remarkably high special diversification with over 250 types of reef building corals and 1000 species of fish.

Throughout the archipelago these water are mixing. The strong currents in the region are notorious, and whilst they help to promote and feed the coral and fish life, can make for some challenging diving. Experienced operators need to be careful to dive the right sights at the rights times, to avoid risk both to the divers and reefs. Many sites may only be dived at slack tide, on certain phases of the moon.

A large population of Manta Rays are resident to the park and can be found on certain sites at certain times.

Komodo can be dived from both live-aboards and by day trips from Labuan Bajo, Flores. live-aboards and day trips are both able to get to all the known 80 dive sites. There are daily flights from Bali (90minutes) but you should book early. Live-aboard cruises departing from Labuan Bajo maximise the time spent in the park compared to those departing from Bali.

Weather in Komodo is favourable year round, with the only time to avoid during the Northern Monsoon in February.

I find a 1 mm sports suit, and a 3mm full length suit the best combination to accomodate the full range of water temperatures. (18 (Rare) to 28 degrees C)

PS. The dragons can swim! But usually prefer to bask in the shade!
