This beautiful rocky coast begins from Blanes, 80Km Barcelona eastwards and spreads out to French border. Costa Brava owes this name because this wide area has exuberant vegetation that comes to the blue and green sea, reaches its shore casting green light on golden beaches or ascends high on rocky cliffs.

Water temperature varies from around 12 degrees centigrade in the winter to about 25 degrees in the summer. Visibility is usually good (15 - 20 meters), better in summer (20-30 meters).

Most of the dives are reefs, and the diving can be very easy. There is no need for liveaboards. Many sites can be reached from the shore and there are dive centers in the majority of coastal towns offering guided day boats and shore dives. Marine life is rich and wonderful: groupers, moray eels, conger eels, little barracudas, John Dory, grey and spotted stingrays, lobsters, big scorpionfish, big yellow sponges...

Sea conditions vary therefore, depending where you dive and in which time of year you dive. Most diving certifications are welcomed and most dive centers are associated to international diving organisations. The diving can also be adventurous with some advanced diving on some deep wrecks. That’s the beauty, something for everyone.

In case of emergencies, Costa Brava has two hyperbaric chamber centers and a good emergency transportation system. Since November 1997 you must have Diver's Accident Insurance to dive in Spain. If you do not have one, most dive centers will be able to sell you one. Don’t expect the same level of service found say, in the Caribbean. You will be expected to carry your gear on and off the boat like real divers!

Costa Brava is easy to get to, value for money, safe, and fully loaded with culture. English and French is widely spoken. When you dive the Costa Brava you must explore the land too! A country town which is worthwhile to visit is Tossa de Mar. Marc Chagall, who painted it in 1933 described it as 'blue paradise'. Also Cadaqués is a one of the beautiful old villages of the Costa Brava.
