Hawaii is an absolutely beautiful place to dive. I've been four times, and each time I get ready for a trip I can't wait to pack my dive gear!

On the Big Island, there is an amazing dive opportunity called Manta ray Madness. I went with a dive operation called Kona Honu Divers, and they were great. They offer a two tank dive trip that is exceptional. The first dive takes place in early evening while you still have some light. I saw garden eels waving back and forth like some kind of underwater plant... but as you get closer they dart back into their underground holes. If you wait patiently- they slowly crawl back out and again you see about 30 to 50 little eels waving back and forth in the curent. The second dive is the most exciting. You must wait until it is completely dark. At this point the crew helps everyone get ready and gives thorough instructions about the use of the dive lights (which are included in the dive). You must follow your instructor to the bottom and kneel on your knees while you shine your light upward in front of your face. Shortly after that you will be overcome with wonder as HUGE manta rays begin to descend upon you. They are drawn to the plankton that swim above your head in the illuminated water. I have done this dive twice, and each time I think I saw between 6 to 10 manta rays. They are absolutely majestic. They are all different sizes, but every one of them is just huge. The way they gracefully swim through the water almost looks like they are doing some sort of ballet. This particular dive has been ranked as one of the best in the world. Don't miss it if you go there!

The actual city of Kona has many hotels that seem to be ok. Personally I stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa Village the last three times I was in Kona, and it was breathtaking. This resort is about 20 minutes north of Kona, but well worth the drive. The ammenities are too numerous to count. There is a man-made lagoon which is perfect for snorkeling, and a dolphin discovery center where you can swim with the dolphins for an added price. When I snorkeled I ran into at least three sea turtles and many fish. There are three different towers you can stay in, and two of them have great pools. You can for simply lounge, or you can venture down one of the mini water slides. Children and adults will all find something to enjoy. If pampering is what you like- then the spa will be for you. I especially love the smell of all the products they make and sell from the spa. There are many options for eating and shopping- but you must be ready to pay a hefty price. This hotel is not inexpensive in any way. Don't get me wrong- it's fabulous- but you pay for the amazing ambience and beautiful surroundings. To save money, it is wise to take the dollar shuttle down to the King's Shops and purchase goods/food there. Another word of caution is that the Big Island doesn't seem to have many sand beaches (at least not on the Kona coast). The black rock beaches are really pretty; but they are not suitable for swimming.

I have always gone in June because I have participated in the Kona Marathon. If you love sports and want to participate in several things on one vactaion, this may be a good spot for you! The weather is beautiful and the people are very friendly.
