The Russels are home to the Solomon Islands version of the famous million dollar point in Vanuatu. The site, know as White beach was one of three main areas of Allied operations during the Second World War (the others being Red beach on Guadalcanal and Blue beach at Tulagi)

When the troops pulled out, a huge amount of military hardware was dumped into a deep channel rather than being left for the locals or the enemy to use. This wreckage now provides divers with lots to look at, at depths ranging from 1m to deeper than 50m. Trucks, hundreds of rounds of 5 inch ammunition and assorted other rusty bits can be clearly seen in this very sheltered location. This spot is worthy of several dives including a dusk dive to see the mandarin fish that can be found around 8m.

The Russel Islands also features a number of large caves, some of which offer the opportunity to shallow dive 100 meters into the centre of a small island and then surfacing in the jungle before dropping down to continue your dive back out and around the island. On one such dive to a spot called the crocodile pond I was lucky enough to see a 2.5 m saltwater croc from below with only his head out of the water resting on the bank. (FYI. later research failed to find any reports of a scuba diver ever being taken by a croc while diving)

The Russell’s are full of great diving, unfortunately at the current time they are only accessible by a couple of live aboard boats based out of the Solomons or PNG but if you track these operators down you will get to see these sites and many more that will make a long trip well worth while.
