Kaikoura is a penninsula located on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The township is nestled in under the mountains of the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges. The scenery is stunning with the mountains seeming to rise out of the sea!
The diving is very nice here with lots of sites easily accessed by shore or by a short boat ride. The kelp forests are home to an abundance of fish life, encrusting sponges, anenomes, invertabrates octopus and of course the crayfish! Fur seals are encountered over the summer months while diving and this is amazing! These seals are truly the clowns of the sea- they are very inquisitive, active and very playful. Being wild animals means that encounters are hard to predict but over summer the chances are pretty good. You can even to snorkelling trips out with the seals.
There are heaps of other marine mammals found in kaikoura from the giant sperm whales, dolphins, orca through to albatross and of course the seals!
Getting to kaikoura is easy. It is 2.5 hours drive north from Christchurch or 1.5 hours south of Blenhiem. There are reqular shuttles, buses and trains and you can even fly in from Wellington in the north island!
There is a range of quality value accomodation and it is only a short walk from anywhere in town to the dive shop which is right in the centre of the main street opposite the visitor information centre.
