When you choose Linosa for your dive holiday, you're in one of the most uncontaminated places in the Mediterranean, far from crowds and stress!
Linosa is a small and delicious island part of the very south Pelagie islands, full of nature and life. Its volcanic characteristics continue underwater giving place to sinuous caves and holes, lived by all kind of sessile species. Its clear waters, known as the clearest of Mediterranean Sea, are crossed by great pelagic fishes.
Linosa is an ideal aim for experts as well as beginners in diving traveling in couple, alone or in group, and for all sea lovers looking for nature and relaxation during the whole summer season.
Linosa offers about 10 dive sites composed by several underwater itineraries through shoals, archaeological routes, walls and some small caves as well.

There is enough for all kind of level of experience: shallow and colourful depths for beginners, breathtaking deep dives for experts.
Underwater flora and fauna are similar to tropical waters, a mix of Mediterranean wonders and Red Sea colours: sponges and fishes decorate the rocks and big fishes as well as numerous flocks strolling around in undisturbed environment.
What really makes Linosa marvellous underwater is its geological forming: lava has created strange and characteristic shapes and tunnels, entertaining divers of all levels and interests.
Wrecks are not Linosa's speciality, although the island has been in history a shelter for ancient Roman ships: deep waters surround the island hiding treasures of the past, forbidding recreational divers to uncover its secrets.
Who is interested in marine biology or geology will certainly have much to do in Linosa.
Since 2003, Linosa is also a new aim for technical divers: deep dives are possible everywhere as well as one way routes for nitrox divers.
A wreck of an English Airplane of IIWW, a Bristol Beaufighter, was found at 65-70 meters, not far from the coast. But old people still alive witness about more wrecks...

The Land
Linosa is a volcanic island, a result of 3 volcanic explosions. On the top of the 3 mountains still lay the shape of their craters.
Maximum hight 195 mt. The Mountains are: Monte Rosso, Monte Vulcano and Monte Nero.
Other hills and valleys lay among them.
The coast consists mainly in rocks, but there's one short beach at Cala Pozzolana di Ponente, very particular for its black coloured sand. On this beach every year or 2, sea turtles lay their eggs.
Other sites of the coast for bathing and swimming are Cala Mannarazza, on the northern part of the island, and Faraglioni, on the east coast down by the lighthouse, where risen rocks have created a protect bay.

Nature
Its quite amazing to find such a rich vegetation considering its latitude and environment and comparing to Lampedusa. There are also several endemic species of plants, anyway all part of typical Mediterranean vegetation.
Animals are quite rare on land, only wild rabbits and some domestic animals besides some typical reptiles (such as the black lizard - as the colour of lava ground).
Although Linosa is part of I.B.A list (Important Bird Area): on the island is a huge colonization of a kind of Seagull, the Colonectris diomedea, which has chosen Linosa to lay its eggs.
In Spring and in Autumn, Linosa is a comfortable stop for migratory birds and so a good place for Birdwatchers.

General Information
Linosa is a Natural Park and has 450 inhabitants.
Fishing and agriculture are the main activities, although for living they rely on tourism.
Its little village has few shops, souvenirs and food shops. A small health care center and a Chemist's are all what people can get on the place. For emergencies a helicopter service is available. The nearest hospital and decompression chamber is in Lampedusa.
There are a couple of restaurants, bars and a wine bar, but night life is not the main interest, although visitors love to stay up late just enjoying company at the bar.
Accommodation on the island consists in private apartments and houses, located in the village or in the outskirts. There is only one little hotel.
It is possible to rent scooters, no cars are allowed without permission.

Important: no banks nor automatic cash counters. Credit cards (VISA and MASTERCARD) are accepted only at ticket office or at one Diving Centre. Although there is not much to spend on the island, all payments are done by cash, so it's wise to bring along enough to pay all needs.
Banks are in Lampedusa (1h hydroplane, €18 one trip) or in Porto Empedocle.
