THE DIVING
Diving in and around Nerja is excellent. A marine park runs from Maro (next village to Nerja) for about 20/30 miles along the coast. The visibilty varies from good to excellent (10m to 25m+). Being a marine park, there's a variety of aquatic life to see including octopus, cuttlefish, conger eel, moray eel, scorpion fish, sea urchin, starfish, wrasse, bream, nudibranchs etc etc.
At the time of writing (July 2005), there are no wrecks in the immediate area. However, during my last visit, I was reliably informed that the Spanish authorities are planning to sink a number of wrecks in the park starting next year (2006). Apparently, there'll even be a replica spanish galleon!!

THINGS TO DO
Nerja lies at the foot of the Sierra mountains. There's a number of local villages worth visiting including Frigilliana - a small village of typical Med white-washed houses and small alleyways. A visit to the world famous Nerja Caves is a must, and if you time your visit you may be able to see a concert in the auditorium inside the caves!!! Malaga is 45 minutes west of Nerja and is definitely worth a visit. Granada is approx 1hrs drive away. And in the winter, drive 1.5hrs north of Nerja and you'll be skiing!!!
At night time, the Balcon d'Europa (Balcony of Europe) in Nerja comes alive with bars, cafes and restaurants as does the Playa Burriana. Playa Burriana (Burriana Beach) is the largest beach in Nerja and very family friendly.

TIME OF YEAR
Being on the Costa del Sol, anytime of year is a good time to go - air temps range from 17 to 20 deg C in Winter and 35 + deg C in the summer. Sea temperature drops to about 14 deg C in the winter. The Spanish are fond of their festivals so its worth checking to see if your visit co-incides with a festival, as its always worth checking them out for the experience!!

GETTING THERE
Nerja is really straight-forward to get to. The nearest airport is Malaga. Hire a car at the airport for the easy 45 minute drive east or alternatively catch the shuttle bus from the airport to the station and then transfer at the station to the local bus that will take you to Nerja.
