The diving from Tofo Beach is incredible. We'd heard the rumours about year round whalesharks and mantas but hadn't really believed it could be true. We visited in March and it was peak whaleshark time, although the people we dived with told us that the whalesharks are here all year round with average about 5 per day during the 'off season'. However, we were seeing around 20 whalesharks on the dive trips and special snorkelling trips that we joined. Also, there were a lot of mantas at Manta Reef. We saw around 15 mantas on the first visit to Manta Reef and between 8 to 10 on the second two dives there. We also saw mantas on Galleria, which is a 30m drift dive only about 10 minutes journey from Tofo Beach, and The Oasis which was about 30 minutes from Tofo Beach. Amazon Reef was teeming with schooling fish, from Barracuda to a huge school of bannerfish, and we also saw leopard sharks, white tip reef sharks and what we thought was a Zambezi down in the bowl of the reef at 28m.

The shallow sites we visited were also fantastic. The reefs were in really good condition, lots of fish, octopus, cuttle fish, lobster, loads of different kinds of shrimp and we also saw a pod of humpback dolphins on the way to the dive at Crocodile Rock, again just about 10 minutes boat trip from the beach.

Tofo Beach itself is a large, sweeping bay of yellow sand with lots of different places to stay including backpackers, a small hotel, houses and chalets to rent. There are various bars and restaurants. We particularly liked Dino's bar where the music was excellent and the prawns and pizzas were fantastic, and Casa de Comer which was like a little meditteranean cafe/restaurant that sells a mix of Mozambian and French food.

The people were friendly and open and we had an amazing time there. There was also a riding school there and we went on one trip and took the horses onto the beach at sunset.

To get there was easy. The road is tarmac and in quite good condition all the way to the beach and accommodation and dive shop. We had a car and drove but spoke to a lot of people that took the local bus from Maputo which is the capital in the south of the country (about 500km away). We found out that there is also an airport at Inhambane which is the small town 20km from Tofo. The people we dived with said that they were able to book flights and minibus transfers - the whole package if we wanted it for our next trip to Tofo.
