Cay Caulker is a quiet, very laid back island within the Belize barrier reef system. Much less touristy than Ambergris Cay, it has a style all of it's own.

Diving is by a short boat ride to the barrier reef less than 1 mile away. The snorkelling trips go to the sheltered leeward side of the reef but when diving you cross over into the choppy water and drop down into the channels and walls of the reefs. Currents can be disconcerting in places but are usually manageable. If you get seasick, take some pills beforehand if the wind is picking up!

The reefs are in reasonable condition but there is quite a bit of what looks like snorkeler damage on the leeward side. Lots of small reef fish congregate on the leeward side and to a lesser extent on the outer side. Eagle rays are sometimes seen as are Carribean spiney lobsters.

As well as standard reef diving there are also a few special places to visit. There is a Manta Ray Alley where you are almost guaranteed a visit by a pack of Manta Rays that think you will feed them. You can get very close indeed! There are also Dugong watching trips (however - you will NOT be allowed in the water).

Further afield, Belize is famous for it's giant Blue Hole. A full day trip to Lighthouse Reef will place you on top of a massive underwater cave that collapsed to leave a spectacular wall dive. This is for experienced divers as it can be a deep dive to reach huge stalactites.

To get to Cay Caulker is a taxi boat trip from either Ambergris Cay or Belize City (takes about 1 hour) and they can be packed tight (do not take massive amounts of baggage if you can help it) and run on an almost hourly basis.

The Cay itself is very narrow, and (thanks to a hurricane a few years ago) only a few miles long. There are no cars in general use, instead golf buggies or hand carts are used to get around. Frankly, walking around is the best way!

Night life is usually limited to a few nice beers or killer cocktails at the Lizard Bar at the northern point of the island, watching the sun set before wandering off to find some good creole cooking.
