Kosrae is a high island formed by an ancient volcano, surrounded on all sides by a healthy, vibrant hard coral fringing reef. The island is relatively young so barrier reefs and lagoons have not yet formed.

The reef (about 43 miles long) is protected by over 55 mooring buoys which are used by dive operators and fishermen alike.

At about 20 ft the reef top begins to slope gently to 60 ft, where it will drop again. The second drop might be sheer or it might be a steep but gentle slope.

All of the normal tropical reef residents live here, as well as a number of elusive animals. Pelagic visitors including bill fish, mantas, turtles, dolphins and occasionally whales are also found on Kosrae's reef.

Currents can vary from light to screaming fast, all dive operators treat each dive as a drift dive.

Although very small and remote, most modern conviences are available, including internet and GSM 900 cell access.

Kosrae is on Continental Airlines island hopper route. Three days a week flight 957 orginates in Honolulu and stops in the Marshall Islands (Majuro and Kwajalien) before stopping on Kosrae. After leaving Kosrae the plane (a 737 - 800) stops on Pohnpei and Chuuk (Truk Lagoon) before ending in Guam. The next day flight 956 starts in Guam and stopping on each island in turn, ends up in Honolulu.

Yap and Palau are just on the south west side of Guam and it is easy to combine these islands with a trip to Kosrae.
