Negril is about an hour and a half bus ride west from Montego Bay.

Most of the beach areas are private resorts. There are several dive operators in the area.

The reefs in Negril are very populated with fan corals, brain corals, and several other varieties of coral. Lots of tube sponges many different colors. Reef sharks are present but not plentiful. You may also see some turles but they too are hard to find. What you will see is schools of barracuda, grunts, squirel fish, and other popular carribean reef species. There are also spotted and green moray eels, eagle and sting rays. I saw more eagle rays than anything else. It seemed like they were all around me.

The waters are fairly warm. I just went this June (2205) and I dove with a 3mm shorty at 70ft with no problems. Most dives are in the morning and late afternoon. There are some rock formations that are shaped like arches, some wrecked tug boats, and a plane or two.(probably an old drug plane) There is some shore diving but it's O.K. It's much better to travel by boat to the reefs.

When you are not diving there is plenty of nightlife to keep you entertained, if you don't care about nightlife check out the YS falls and the blackriver. The Black river contains over 100 crocodiles so you'll definitely see one.

The weather in Negril is very humid and typically rains from 12pm-2pm. The locals are very helpful and accomodating.
