The Florida Gulf Coast waters are sub-tropical which means there is little hard coral or brightly colored fish but it makes up for that with a tremendous variety of beautiful sponges, soft corals and many, many invertebrates.

Expect visibility to be around 20-40 feet in these nutrient-rich waters and be on the lookout for Spotted Eagle Rays, Nurse and Bull Sharks, Great Barracuda, Loggerhead Turtles and massive Goliath Grouper.

The diving is easy in the Gulf as there is typically little to no current. Approximately 3 miles out from shore is a ledge which is the old Florida coastline. The ledges make navigation a breeze and typically have nice undercuts that attract some of the larger species. Fossilized pieces of Dugong ribs (ancester to the Manatee) can often be found on these dives.

Snorkeling and shore diving is very poor in this area due to low visibility conditions in shore. Resort-type SCUBA courses are also not recommended for the same reason.

Busch Gardens, Wet & Wild, the Lowry Park Zoo, Florida Aquarium, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, MOSI Museum of Science and Industry and the MOTE Marine Institute are a few of the other activities nearby. Disney World is 1.5 hours away.
