I have dived all over the Caribbean and Latin America yet some how never made it to the Dominican Republic, that is until recently. Just an hour and a half southeast of Miami and just outside of the Bermuda Triangle, this island, the second largest behind Cuba, has it all.

Last December I went to Boca Chica located about 15 minutes west of Santa Domingo. Its the kind of place that just makes you feel good. Dominican people are warm and friendly. In fact this may well be one of the best kept secrets in island travel. Europeans have known for a long time what a bargain it is.

Pharmacys, liquor stores, street vendors, bars and restaurants line the main street. The beach is literally steps away. Walking west, away from the all inclusive resorts past the beach bars and cafes, the music seems to float on the water. There are so many great places to eat or just sit with a cool drink and take it all in.

So...before you run out and book that third trip to Mexico, check out Boca Chica. Its safe, inexpensive and easy to get to. Several airlines have daily flights in and out of Santa Domingo and the wrecks and reefs are alive with all manner of marine life.
