The atoll-like Apo Reef is located 20 miles (32km) west of Occidental Mindoro. The reef system is divided by a narrow channel, running from East to West, into two lagoons (North and South Lagoons). Brilliant white sand bars and numerous coral formations and reef systems form this off-shore reef. Some 385 species of fish reside in the reefs including sharks (hammerheads included), stingrays, eaglerays, mantas, tuna and schools of jacks and snappers. Coral species number around 400-500 and three ships have also been known to have found their final resting place here providing new habitat for the inhabitants of Apo reef.
