Atauro is a small island approximately 14 miles off the coast of Dili, the capital of the youngest democracy in the world; East Timor.

Diving around the island is basically only done by boat, and includes a wide variety of sites, one amazing experience after the other! Totally unspoilt, and only discovered less then 5 years ago this is diving at its best! Manta's, hammerheads and an incredible variety of pelagics roam the waters where visibility often exeeds 40 meters. Muck divers wil have a great time with ghost pipe fish, pygmee sea horses and many other critters that dwell in and around East Timors fantastic coral gardens.

Diving is done all year around although November - March the wet season kicks in and sometimes the wheather can be a bit rough.

Currently 3 dive organizations operate in East Timor, although only one regularly visits Atauro Island. Apart from diving Atauro per boat they can also take you out along the coast of mainland East Timor where many sites still await discovery and naming!
East Timor itself is relaxed, not expensive, and for almost any budget suitable lodging can be found.

I have worked in East Timor for the UN as well as for private companies and can fully recommend East Timor as a diving holiday destination for anyone who is looking for diving off the beaten track!
