I worked as an instructor for a short spell in 2006 taking divers to the Damaniyat Islands and had some great diving experiences there.

Been used to Caribbean and Asian species the biodiversity of the islands was a pleasant change with life plentiful, local inhabitants inquisitive (!) on the predominantly rocky reefs and no over crowding issues of sites whatsoever (imagine the opposite of a busy day at a popular dive site in Sharm).

You can expect to see plenty of turtles and sting rays, some nudibranch (although not a large diversity in my experience), some nurse sharka nd if you're really luck a guitar shark or a whaleshark. The best dive site we experienced was called 'Aquarium' which was a little further out than most of the others but can be described as a wild west of a dive site - blink and you will miss something!

Conditions are dependent upon season - air temperature can be deceiving too as the first 5m of water will feel nice and warm folloed by a drop in temperature below this depth at certain times of the year. Moreover, the first 5m can often appear like pea soup when algae is spawning but water can be much clearer underneath albeit a little dark sometimes.

... and if we'd had more time we were convinced there weer plenty more sites yet to be discovered.

If you're looking for something new and different then this is the place, and there's also enough out of water things to do for a week or two for a good all round holiday.

Enjoy if you go!
