The town of Santa Marta is a 'holiday' resort for the 'rich/powerful' Colombians with a couple of hotels along the beach.

I stayed in Hotel Irotama which is a decent(best in Santa Marta) hotel complex with bungalows along the beach. Because of the above clientel..... it is fairly safe. To put that in perspective
the guerillas only blew up 5 things (20 miles away) that month!

In Santa Marta at the time I believe that there were 2 or 3 dive centers. Prices were very reasonable ($20 for a boat dive). Equipment and professionalism, from a european perspective, is 'lacking' and I would have liked to have had my own equipment.

Did a boat dive, viz below 5 meters, very little life.

As far as i know there is nothing there that you can not get somewhere else....much safer!

My reason for being there was work.

Things to see, is the Tayrona National Park north along the coast,
The lost city (in the sierra madre mountains?) on the border to Venezuela,
and a 'Sea World' complex outside the town (but If you care about animals you should not go there and support them! because the way they keep the animals is horrible)
