The diving off Walindi is quite varied with different species of coral. The fish are in great abundance. Not only are there a lot of fish, but the species abundance is prevalent as well. Reporting on our last dive, there were gobies with blind shrimp, clown fish, pyramid butterflys, spotted unicorns, gray whaler sharks, sea horse, large barrel sponges (big enough for a person inside), trigger fish in numerous variety, hawkfish (threadfin&dwarf, blackside& longnose), dusky gregory, sulphur damsel, black damsel, humbug, threespot, goldtail, surge, bicolor, yellowmask angel, regal angels, sixbanded angel, bicolor angel, masked bannerfish, redfin butterfly, meyer's butterfly, bennets butterfly, goatfish, blackand white snapper and many - many not remembered! Numerous nudibrachs and flatworms as well. Eels are found also on these reefs. Cuttle fish and octopus. Stonefish, scorpion fish, anthias by the thousand. Walindi has some nice bungaloes near the water to stay in, a common area for eating (food is included and is very good), a bar, and a small gift shop with local art such as masks from around the region. At Walindi you can take a tour to the 'hot river' (110F), see the 'firefly bush' after dark, visit the local market in the a.m.@ Kimbe, see a B25. The plants grow in great variety, there are flowers blooming, the birds are also high in variety. On the Walindi grounds is where you board the 'Star Dancer' and 'Febrina' - depending on the time of year. Not easy to get to, planes often cancel or are late, Walindi is a 45 min. van ride from the very small airport (Hoskins) on New Britain. Your luggage will be weighed and you will pay if over weight coming in and out of the airports in PNG. (Papua New Guinea) There are certain times of the year that there are 'sing-sings' (native costume and dance) Special tip:...have patience, give yourself a couple of days on either side of traveling in and out of New Britain. The current exchange rate is three Kina to one US dollar. You must obtain a visa upon entering the country PNG (at Port Morseby), easily obtained at the airport.
