Yongala Wreck is my absolute favorite dive in the world. So many things to see you forget there is even a sunken ship down there. BUll shark, sting rays, eagle rays, nurse shark, maori wrasse, sea snakes, wobblegongs, guitar sharks, barracuda, turtles, huge groupers, & FISH, FISH, FISH! We went with Prodive, it was a long boatride and there were crazy waves. Can't wait to dive there again with a camera!

I went on the Pro-Dive Townsville liveaboard, the Seaesta. The boat really needs to be replaced -- it's an old, rusting sea cow with no place to relax between dives. The good news is that with a new boat (which I hear they will be getting soon) the ProDive Townsville liveaboard will be a great trip. Nice reef dives (the coral on the GBR outside of Townsville is in much better shape than outside of Cairns), and the Yongala is fantastic. The crew on my trip were also great. One other downside is that ProDive didn't offer Nitrox -- and the Yongala would be PERFECT for it -- the deepest parts of the dive are only about 30m. If you're not interested in the reef dives and just want to do the Yongala, book a couple days with a dayboat operator -- some of which only go to Yongala (weather permitting of course). I think there are a couple of dayboat operators in Townsville and a couple south of Townsville that are much closer to the wreck.

Many divers say that the Yongala is the no 1 dive site in the world - and they're right! I have never seen such diverse sea life in one place in all of my diving - Watch out for the current though as it really rips along from bow to stern!!

The SS Yongala sank in a cyclone on the 23 March 1911 remaining undiscovered for almost 50 years and was not positively identified until 1966. Lying in 14-28 metres of water and 100m long it is the largest and most intact historic shipwreck in Australian waters. |

reviews for S.S. Yongala: |
My first wreck dive just last week (Nov 2006) and first dive to 30 metres after gaining Advanced Cert. Very rough conditions and strong current. Most difficult part was getting back on the boat without being knocked out. Many divers were sea sick, some unable to dive due to rough conditions. Once underwater saw plenty of olive sea snakes (very friendly!), Giant Trevally, a few clown fish...highlight was HUGE green sea turtle swimming with us.

This was an awesome dive. I travelled down the coast from Townsville to Ayr and dived with Yongala Dive. Only 40 minutes boat ride out to the wreck. We had a great day with breakfast in the morning and a BBQ lunch when we got back. THe divers were a mixed group from Advanced through to Instructor. The fish were awesome, also saw turtles, oloive sea snakes. This was my first wreck dive and can't wait to get back there one day.

I dived this wreck in 2001 and it was awesome. I was new to diving but didn't find it difficult. It is without a doubt the best wreck dive I have done. The Groupers are ginormous!! You cannot go to Queensland and not do this dive!

fantastic dive, but sometimes the conditions are not suitable for inexperienced divers with limted depth experience. I have experienced strong currents that will limit bottom time for the non-confident divers.
