300miles southwest of Costa Rica lies the most amazing island of Cocos. The main island, four miles long by two miles wide is jungle covered and wild-looking and slopes dramatically into the sea. Spectacular waterfalls cascade from the lush green cliffs and high above frigate birds and blue footed boobies circle and dive. The beauty and drama of the Cocos above water is remarkable enough but it is more than matched by the diving below. The island and outlying rocky outcrops are an oasis in the middle of the Pacific, the diving is dramatic and thrilling with powerful displays from big pelagic species. Most notably the scalloped hammerheads that are usually seen in large schools of 200 or so, silky sharks, grey reef sharks and marbled Rays. Huge Pacific mantas and whalesharks are also often seen cruising by.

Cocos is not an easy place to get to but the incredible diving makes it worthwhile and once you have been there once you'll want to go back again. You can only reach Cocos by liveaboard and there are currently three vessels operating there. That's the Okeanos Aggressor, The Undersea Hunter and the Sea Hunter. All these vessles depart from the Costa Rican port town of Puntarenas and it is then a 34 hour trip across the Pacific to reach the island. The crossing can sometimes be rough but it is also a great time to look out for dolphins and whales which are often spotted en-route. The three vessels operate standard 10 night trips, Puntarenas is a 2hour transfer from Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose and it is recommended that guests joining the boat arrive the day before embarcation and stay in a hotel in San Jose prior to joining the boat.

Sea Hunter and Undersea Hunter also offer a schedule of 13 and 15 night trips that take in the rocky outcrop of Malpelo.
