Diving from the Puerto de Mazarron is usually by boat. The diving is excellent with over a dozen dive sites worth visiting numerous times. Travel to the Puerto de Mazarron could not be easier with the budget airlines flying daily into San Javier airport, Murcia. The are of Mazarron has proved popular with many Brits buying second homes there or moving to live there full time. Best dive sites are in the bay of Mazarron just half a mile outside the new Marina completed in 2007. Fish in the bay are numerous and include baracuda, sword fish, morray eels, dentex, grouper, conger eel, sun fish, trigger fish, wrasse of all varities, octopus, cuttle fish, scorpion fish, blue spotted rays, sea horses and many many more. Top sites in the bay include El Bajo (an underwater mountain) strewn with a multitude of fishing boats sunk purposely to create artificial reefs, and Dragaminas Nalon (a spanish navy minesweeper) sunk in 1999 to create an artificial reef. Out of the bay are numerous wall dives to depths exceeding 40 metres for those technical guys to explore along with some very safe pretty cavern dives. Best time of year to dive is may to October when water temperatures exceed 22 celcius, but winter diving is pleasant too with the warmer never getting any colder than 14 degrees.
Accomodation in the area is beautiful and range from Pensionista's to apartments to luxury villas with pools to unadulterated 5 star hotel luxury. Always try and book air tickets well in advance as they tend to be cheaper.
