| June 2011 |
Plan to have lots of wreck diving but ran into a severe tropical storm. Only got two dives in on the barges artificial wreck and the excellent penetration dive on the El Capitan. Really only scratched the surface so hope to get back and revisit the wrecks. Blue Rock was fun with good food and great service. Like McArthur, I shall return.

Ideal for wreck diving with numerous wrecks around the bay, though at the moment three of the top sites including USS NEW YORK are out of bounds to divers due to the US Navy being in port !!
rest of the dives are great though visability can be very poor at times.

An interesting variety of wrecks. I have visited four of them. San Quentin has good sealife; several octopus was a highlight. There is also a nearby reef with giant clams on this dive - using enriched air is handy here. USS New York is impressive with it's bulk, large propellers and guns. Seian Maru offers a peaceful swim through it's large holds. LST was a relaxing dive the most historically interesting for me, having served in the Normandy and Okinawa landings of WWII.

The turn of the century Spanish Wreck The 'El Capitan' is next to a reef in 70' of water. Most of the wreck can be seen in 40' of water. El Cap lies on her port side and has 3 large cargo holds. The wreck is two minutes away from the Ocean Adventure PADI Resort Dive Center. Lobsters can be seen inside the boiler room (but El Cap is in Ilanin Bay Marine Preserve!).

I have dove with whales dolphins and sea lions for 30 years. I still get a buzz out of diving with our whales at Ocean Adventure.

| It was a freighter of nearly 3,00 tones just under 130 metres long. She crashed in Ilanin Bay where she rests on a sloping bottom, with the deepest point being less than 18 metres and coming to within 5 metre of the surface. The hull of the El Capitan has seen better days and has collapsed in a number of places. |

the info about the elcap above is widely held but sorry to say is wrong Majaba (AG 43) was built as SS Meriden by Albina Engine & Machine Works, Portland, Oreg., in 1919; acquired by the Navy under charter as SS El Capitan from her owner, E. K. Wood Lumber Co., of San Francisco, Calif., 23 April 1942; renamed Majaba and commissioned the same day. www.subicbaydive.com has a full history

| She has had three different names during her years of service, with her original name New York the common name she is referred to in peace. During the first World War she was renamed the Saratoga. She was known as the USS Rochester at the time she was deliberately scuttled in January 1944. |

the top service is good for most divers, and advance diver can view the guns aand prop (depth), Tech divers can do deep penetration while properly trained wreck divers can do some penetration. Was scuttled in Dec.1941 while the Japanese were marching towards Olongapo not 1944
