In the comparatively short time since tourism began in the Maldives, the country has rapidly gained recognition as one of the top diving destinations in the world. Yet even now, only a tiny part of the nation has been explored by divers and thousands of kilometers of reefs have still to yield their long garnered secrets.

The Republic of the Maldives is a magnificent chain of tiny islands stretching 868km across the Equator in the Indian Ocean. The islands are geographically grouped into ring shaped reefs called atolls and there are 26 geographical atolls in the whole archipelago. The atolls vary in size and in the number of islands they contain, one of the smallest is Thoddoo with just one island and the largest atoll is Huvadhoo in the south which is 74km by 65km and contains about 250 islands.

The diving in the Maldives is exceptional, reef life is prolific with over 700 common fish species and many more still to be discovered and classified. Whether it is the sight of the awesome manta ray, a giant whale shark, being face to face with a grey reef shark or spotting a tiny, brightly coloured flat worm, the Maldives has it all. Manta rays are particularly prolific but you do need to dive in the right place at the right time.

There are currently more than 88 resorts islands in the Maldives and it is quite difficult to get proper information about each of these resorts but a good starting point is to look at the number of rooms on the resort and where the island is placed according to the seasonal conditions.

The South West season from May to November is wetter than the North east season December through to April. The seasons in the Maldives affect what marine species are found where and it is important to take the seasons into account when planning your island stay.

There is no doubt that if you want the best of the diving, then a liveaboard ensures you get both clear viz, pelagic diving as well as visits to the manta cleaning stations on the back of the currents. But equally, well chosen resorts islands can offer excellent diving.
