St Maarten has become a great dive destination. Return divers have come to enjoy the outlying wreck and reef diving, which offers fantastic dives and excellent photo opportunities. For the average diver whose partner or family do not dive, here is where St Maarten excels. Plenty of beaches, snorkeling, activities, shopping and day trips to keep everyone entertained while the divers go about the pleasure of diving. Waters are warm and inviting, and the marine life abundant. Dives are at comfortable depths of around 70', with shallower dives for novice divers and refresher dives for certified divers. Most dive sites are only about 25 minutes out from the south side of the island. No shore diving, but great boat dives with friendly and professional staff. Turtle, stingrays, squid, colorful reef fish and sharks are common companions at each dive site. The 1802 wreck of HMS Proselyte is a famous dive site offshore of the Dutch Capital - Phillipsburg. This area is surrounded by an extensive reef maze, making 6 different dive sites to enjoy. The Proselyte remains consist of cannons and anchors, with a few sail boat wrecks in the vicinity. Diving is great year round with warm tropical waters and sunny skies. Nov to March can bring windy conditions with the Christmas Winds blowing, and some extra surface chop. The summer months offer warm balmy dives, with no need for suits. As St Maarten is in close proximity to Saba, the ferry service from Aqua Mania Adventures allows St Maarten divers to enjoy a day trip with a double tank dive in Saba. High Speed ferry service to St Barts and a public ferry to Anguilla offer the same options for those islands. St Maarten is a hub of activity with over 400 restaurants and unparallelled cuisine, casinos, duty free shopping, day trips to the different islands, water sports, evening cruises and night clubs. There are hikes and quiet beaches for eco lovers too. Dive Adventures is one of the longest established dive shops and also has the ferry connecting Saba and St Maarten. The PADI Dive Resort facility, is situated on the marina of one of the largest resorts on island, called Pelican. Dives depart daily at 9am, with beginner instruvtion each afternoon at 2pm. Nitrox is now offered and night dives make for a fun adventure each Thursday. Day trips to Saba are offered Wed through Sun each week. St Maarten is an exciting destination for diving and a well rounded vacation.
