February 2001 Danny and Kerry who own the other dive shop were so accomodating - they treated us like guests of theirs. They would help us to cram fabulous dives into our lunch breaks (we were working in Gizo Hospital). A couple of our party got their rescue diver qualifications very cheaply and in fabulous surroundings. When not diving or working my other half and I hired a local island (with rudimentry huts and facilities) and chilled out. This cost us around $14 a night. During our entire 6 week stay we saw only 5 tourists. It is still truly untouched diving.

June 2005 What a spot! the amount of fish and dive spots/types of diving is obscene - it is truly staggering! The Great Barrier Reef could learn about this level of pristineness. The amount of diving you can do and the huge array of different types of dives - wreck city, huge drift dives (dam fun!), seamounts in fish central - and all within a 20min boat ride. Warm water, real friendly people the Solomons is truly fantastic place. Carl and Sally run the best dive operation I have come across. This place is Peter Pan Land and Fatboys bar is the HQ.

June 2005 Gizo is a great spot to dive due to the variety of fish/coral and wreck dives. There's heaps to see. The water was warm and calm. Gizo itself is a friendly town with cheap beer and not too touristy. A great spot to fish, dive, drink beer and be warm!

Wreck Dives:

Here are the wreck dives we know of for Gizo.

Toa Maru
Virtually intact Japanese transport ship of some 140m (450 feet) length lying on its starboard site. It was run aground after suffering damage from an American attack. The dive starts at an easy 7 metres and slants to 37 metres. Interesting artefacts adorn this vessel that sunk before it could be unloaded. Some of the trinkets include saki bottles, medical supplies, office equipment and rounds of ammunition. The larger objects include bombs, a motorbike, a type 21 tank. For the more experienced divers a guided tour inside the wreck to the bridge, crew quarters, engine room and medical supply room is possiblee.
7m / 23ft
37m / 121ft
Accidental sinking: 31-Jan-1943 Wreck penetration is possible. Technical or decompression diving. More info...
