January 2009 The Great Astrolabe Reef, which is located off of Kadava, had some of the most pristine hard coal that we've ever seen. Despite its size, Kadava island is very sparsely populated, both in terms of indigenous villages and resorts. This translates into fewer divers and fishers to wreck the reef. In fact, when we were there, we were the only dive boat from horizon to horizon. One of the big draws of Kadava is its Manta Rays. You are almost certain to see them at the Manta Point dive site, and they make regular appearances at other spots along the reef. Along with an assortment of reef fish, yellow fin tuna, giant trevally, and sharks cruise the waters. A few dive sites on the reef, like Golden Chimney, have soft corals (lovely yellow ones at this dive spot). We enjoyed the Great Astrolabe Reef area a lot, despite the mediocre vis we had. We stayed at the Matava Eco Resort. The accommodations are very basic (traditional-style grass-clad huts called 'bures'), and the food, which is included, is sometimes quite sparse (pack yourself some granola bars). We've stayed at small 'eco resorts' before, and found that Matava was the most in need of some work. That said, the remoteness of the place is refreshing and the dive guides are very nice, flexible, and do love their reef. If you adjust your expectations on the accommodations and enjoy the diving and solitude, you'll have a great time.

July 2004 The Astralabe is truly a gorgeous hard/soft coral reef system. Visibility is not as good as other parts of Fiji, but still great. Diving the north part of Kadavu provides better visibility, but the reef is not as spectacular.

Wreck Dives:

Here are the wreck dives we know of for Kadavu.

Pacific Voyager
The only wreck on the whole of Kadavu Island happens to have been sunk 120 feet under the Pacific directly in front of Papageno. This 200 foot oil tanker was sunk intentionally to provide habitat for the local marine life.
24m / 79ft
30m / 98ft
Deliberately sunk: 01-Jan-1994 Wreck penetration is possible. Technical or decompression diving. More info...
