We went a few weeks after a cyclone, there was quite a bit of coral damage. Diving was excellent though, we went to 2 mile, 5 mile, 7 mile and 9 mile. The further you go, the longer the boat trip, but this is usually when you get to see dolphins and whale sharks. We did 16 dives in eight days, it was really great. The boat launches are an exciting part of the diving. I found the water temp (25 degrees) to be really cold though.

A long route to get there and all there is to do is diving. Quite a lot of dive boats - I'd not do the trek again, I'd stick to Aliwal Shoal

Sodwana was nice, diving with big waves that make for tricky photography (waves are moving you some 3 to 4 meters back and forth, left and right).
The waves were actually the most exciting thing about Sodwana and definitely a thing to experience.
The marine ife was quite poor when I was there, but this was probably due to the rough sea conditions at the time. Corals are plentifull but the variety is not that big.
Atmosphere on the beach was great. Be prepared to get up early in the morning for diving, they start as early as 06:00.
As you will see on the web, the reefs are named after the distance from the beach to the reef, 2 mile, 5 mile, etc. A genaeral complaint that I have read numerous times is that 90% or more of the dives are done at 2 mile reef. I can confirm this, as in 1 week of diving, I visited 2-mile reef 9 times and 5-mile reef 1 time.
I have unfortunately seen this behaviour of boat captains/dive centers in other parts of the world as well and they usually attribute it to 'wheather', 'circumstances', etc.
Still, when you have a chance, visit Sodwana, overall it was definitely worth the trip, although I won't go through all the trouble of getting there again...
