There are many things to be said about Zanzibar ( Ungunjua ) Island, but not as apparent as the mysteries of this former trading island. In its history the island carries tales and facts of ancient slave markets, spice trade, wool and linen trades, and holds a magnificent allure of diverse culture. As the iconic link between East and West, Zanzibar boasts a feast of attractions to any traveler.
Nestled close to the Africa mainland, adjacent to Tanzania, Zanzibar offers those who seek the thrill of unspoiled beaches, African wildlife encounters, and notwithstanding probably the most intriguing bio-diverse marine life. It is also home to the Zanzibar Red Colobus monkeys, which are highly endangered, and exclusive to the Jozani National Forest reserve on the island.
The diving on Zanzibar is spectacular, and for lack of any other word the coral reefs and marine life at the northern tip of the Archipelago are absolutely mind blowing. Massive beds of hard and soft coral varieties, completely clouded by huge schools of snapper fish, jack fish, yellow fin tuna, sail fish, rainbow runners, barracuda, and dolphins. The underwater landscape is an array of colour, dotted by the appearance of manta rays, whale sharks, and southern right whales in August to October.
The average visibility is around 35 meters, but peaks at 65 meters in February, and the water temperature on this tropical paradise rarely drops below 28 degrees Celsius. A truly soul moving experience is to visit the Mnemba Marine Atoll Reserve, where you literally get within kissing distance of the highly endangered Green Back Turtles. If it is diversity you seek, then this is your type of dive, from nudibranchs, to anemone tube worms, hard and soft corals thriving with clown fish, butterfly fish, angel emperor fish, napoleon ras, and much, much more.
The culture on Zanzibar is unique, and a peaceful co-existence is the order of the day. Nungwi Village, is the home of Sensation Divers, and located on the Northern most tip, and is the only remaining fully integral community. The tourist accommodations, restaurants and services are primarily owned by locals, and offer world class standards through co-operation with international resorts. It is here that the inquisitive minds of our guests are put at ease, with the ability to safely stroll through the friendly local village, and gain first hand experience of the way Africa survives.
Getting to Nungwi is of course an easy enough thing to do. There are regular flights from Johannesburg, Nairobi, Dubai and Addis Ababa to Stonetown, the capital city that holds historical mystique from centuries ago.
