Tubbataha is the largest coral atoll in the Philippines. The reef system covers some 33,200 hectares and lies in the middle of the Sulu Sea, about 150 kilometers East of Puerta Princessa City in Palawan.

It's name is derived from two samal words meaning a long reef exposed at low tide. In 1987 Tubbataha was declared a marine protected area by the local government and eventually proclaimed as a National Marine Park in 1988. Tubbataha was declared a World Heritage Site in 1994 by the World Conservation Union.

The Tubbataha National Marine Park is composed of two coral atolls (North Atoll and South Atoll)separated by a channel. The larger North Atoll is about 16 km long and 4.5 km wide popularly called the Bird Island due to the numerous 'Boobies' that nest on the islet. The smaller South Atoll is about 5 km long and 3 km wide and is called the Lighthouse.

Tubbataha is one of the largest and best dive destinations in the Philippines. Everything about the Marine Park is large, leopard sharks, shovel-nosed sharks, manta rays, eagle rays ,tuna, groupers and large schools of fish. Liveaboard trips are organized from September to June during the Northeast monsoon which is the best time to dive in Tubbataha.
