A one hour fishing-boat ride out to Pigeon Island from Murudeshwar. The island itself is a lava plug, conical, with a boulder-strewn seabed around it. Little coral, but lots of the usual reef fish - lots of morays and large porcupine fish. The deepest water is about 18m - it does gradually shelve away deeper but there is nothing to see.
The best dive for me was West Side. Maximum only 14 m, average 8 m, it consisted of numerous swim-throughs, channels, gullies and the occasional hollowed-out cave. The tidal surge which has produced the hollows is constantly propelling you through or pushing you back.
Being in a military area the island has been closed from time to time, and bizarrely you have to show your passport and Indian visa before you are permitted to dive there! This bureaucracy means you would do best in an organised diving group. There is at least one dive school based in the main hotel, and others from Goa bring divers to stay for a night or two.
Murudeshwar itself is famous for the giant statue of Shiva, built in the 80s or 90s, and the town is full of visitors to the statue. There are a few Europeans there.
