I am a female diver who dives all year round in the cold waters of the UK, with a husband who will only dive in gin-clear, bath-warm water. We have dived the Med, Mexico and the Maldives, but for a close to home getaway, we love Menorca.

We first went to Menorca in 2002 and again in 2003. We really missed not going there last year and can't wait to get back there.

The diving is typically shore-based, not too demanding and the viz is great. The water was a very clement 25-27 degrees in September and the weather was lovely. You can get away with a shortie but I would recommend a 3mm or 5mm full length suit to avoid those nasty scraped knees and jellyfish kisses!

It's ideal for novices, the recently qualified and those not too confident with their diving. In the sheltered cove of Cala Blanca alone we saw octopus, cuttlefish, red scorpionfish, moray, cardinalfish, bream, wrasse, sponges and corals and some little neon-like fishes.

I did my best dive ever at 'The Slipway' next to Los Delfines, diving among a huge shoal of barracuda - magic! There's also caverns, canyons, overhangs and swim-throughs to keep you entertained.

We organised both trips ourselves. The first time we went, Dive Cala Blanca organised for us to stay in a small, clean and friendly Hostal on the outskirts of Cuitadella, 5 mins walk into town. The second time we organised an apartment in Cala Blanca over the internet, as we took family along with us.

Menorca itself is beautiful and very friendly. We can thoroughly recommend it.
