Overall summary of Honduras (inc Bay Islands)
[edit]
The Bay Islands of Honduras are a Divers paradise with year round diving at cheap prices.
Although the mainland is Spanish speaking the Bay Islands retain their British roots and English language.

Utila is the backpacker heaven and divers paradise with approximately a dozen dive centres offering all Padi dive courses. The dive centres all charge the same for diving and dive courses (local agreement between dive association to prevent a price war and so help maintain acceptable standards.)
Roatan is a larger island with an international airport. There are numerous dive operators on Roatan but generally are part of resorts so generally at a higher price than the budget diving of Utila.

The bay Islands are generally safe for divers and tourists, but care must be taken when on the mainland.

How to get to Honduras (inc Bay Islands)
[edit]
From Europe flights to Honduras are generally via the USA.
There are numerous airlines flying from the USA to Honduras with international airports at San Pedro Sula (SAP) and Roatan (RTB). The cheapest way I have found from the UK has been to fly to New York (JFK) or Miami (MIA) and then fly to SAP on the local airline TACA.

If Travelling by road through Central America then there are numerous bus companies which offer competative fares.
Two of these are Ticabus, and Hedmanalas

Top travel tips for Honduras (inc Bay Islands)
[edit]
Best travel tip for Honduras is allow plenty of time for journeys are timetables are for guidance only, actual departure times can be hours later or even sooner !!

I have had ticket for a 6.45am flight and still been sat at the airport at 11.00am though generally the airlines will ensure that you will make any international connections it is advisable to allow a couple of extra hours.

What's the diving like in Honduras (inc Bay Islands)
[edit]
Diving in Honduras is year round,

Utila, There are in excess of 30 permanent dive sites spread around the island.

South side is generally shallower with table top of corals at approx 3 - 5m and then a gradual drop to over 30m.
The North side has generally more dramatic drop off's with wall diving.
Generally visibility is 5 - 25m and there is very little currents making this very easy diving.

Utila has only a few wreck sites. The Halliburton is an ex oil rig supply vessel deliberately sunk as a training site at 30m close to Utila Town.
Look for the large green Moray eel that lives around the wreck, and the bicycle that is on the bridge.

At Ted's Point there is a small motor yacht that sunk in approx 17m making a nice easy dive.
Nearby next to a site called Moon Hole lies the remains of Ron's wreck, though very little remains of this small boat.

Chance of big fish in Honduras (inc Bay Islands)
[edit]
Whalesharks make regular appearances of the Bay Islands and often dive centres will go looking for these amazing creatures. Diving with whalesharks id NOT allowed but snorkelling is encouraged.
Dolphins are often seen swimming and can often play with divers and snorkellers
