What's the diving like in Belize
[edit]
The reefs near San Pedro are just OK. They're fine for casual diving. You'll see lots of parrot fish, groupers, snappers, butterfly fish, almost tame nurse sharks, and triggerfish but they are not a spectacular dive destination. The offshore atolls, however, are spectacular. They have many more fish, stunning vertical walls, and gorgeous coral. If you are a serious diver, stay in the atolls. You can get to the atolls from San Pedro but trips are expensive and infrequent. The Blue Hole is a worthless dive. Go to 130 feet to see a couple big stalagmites? Forget it! I'd rather spend time diving the nearby walls of Lighthouse Reef.

REPLY: I agree the blue hole is worthless. The atolls are way better for seeing big fish. But I enjoyed all of my dives near San Pedro. Rough water, but the dive company we went with (#1 on Trip Advisor) was excellent at helping get you in and out of the water. I like the small stuff and there was plenty. Also nice Morays, Spotted Eagle rays and the friendliest nurse sharks in the caribbean! I would definitely go back.

Is the above OK? Why not edit it if you can do better!

      Coral quality in Belize
[edit]
There is a tremendous variety of corals, fans, whips and crustaceans. The reef system is in really great shape. Nice place to dive and the people are great! Friendliest nurse sharks of any where I have ever been.

Best time to dive in Belize
[edit]
We went in July. Only rained one day. Good vis. Rough water, but I think that is the norm once you reach the reef. Hot temps around 90 but better than 100 at home in July.

Is the above OK? Why not edit it if you can do better!

Big Blue Planet knows about the following locations in Belize:

Cay Caulker
Cay Caulker is a quiet, very laid back island within the Belize barrier reef system. Much less touristy than Ambergris Cay, it has a style all of it's own. Diving is by a short boat ride to the barrier reef less than 1 mile away. The snorkelling t...

Lighthouse Reef
Lighthouse reef is well offshore. We went there from Caye Caullker by speedboat on a 3 tank dive day. THE highlight is 'The Blue Hole', a colapsed ancient cavern, discovered by mister Cousteau himself. You dive down along a straight wall to about...

Liveaboard
I had the opportunity to stay aboard the Wave Dancer before it capsized in a hurricane. The experience was one of the best I have ever had. Traveling to different locations (usually at night) and waking up near a new dive site each day might spoil ...

Turneffe Island
The Turneffe Islands (along with Lighthouse Reef) are the place to dive in Belize. The diving around San Pedro is only OK and it takes forever and a ton of money to get to Turneffe from San Pedro. Stay on Turneffe or Lighthouse and dive Turneffe or L...
