Cayman Islands Scuba Destination Info:
      Overall summary of Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands are lovely; we have visited once or twice a year now for about 12 yrs - says it all really? Diving VERY good- the drop offs are spectacular- esp the North Wall which plummits from around 30m to 2000m - very sheer wall with passing traffic to include Giant Hammerheads and Eagle Rays. Visibility generally 30m +, virtually no current to speak of, dive sites are single moorings only - no lines of boats here, just one boat per mooring. Dive operations plentyful- diving not cheap, but the cost is reflected by the quality of the outfits. Around $100 per 2 tank boat dive.
Island safe, clean, civilised; a strong American influence. Dining out, food, alcohol costs also high, but again quality in all aspects. Variety of hotels, condos etc to choose from and to suit your budget - from the Ritz Carlton to small 'bed and breakfast' type lodgings with everything in between.
Direct flights with BA's 4 times a week via Nassau, also can route via Miami then switch carrier to Cayman Airways or an American airline.
We LOVE it - a great destination for divers of all skills level.

How to get to Cayman Islands
see above - flights from LHR via Nassau or go via Miami and switch carrier....
Top travel tips for Cayman Islands
Low key laid back island - you need minimum of 2 weeks stay to get the most from the islands.
What's the diving like in Cayman Islands
Great! Suits all level of diver; some specialist dive operations if you are interested in Tekkie stuff - re-breathers etc, etc. Water temps generally 26-28c, hardly any current, visibility 30+, mix of shore and boat dives - close to shore (no long boat rides- max about 30 mins), lots of lovely corals, sponges, plenty of turtles, eels, fish life, also Stingrays, Eagle Rays, Hammerheads, Nurse and Reef Sharks............
Best wreck dives in Cayman Islands
Doc Poulson quite good, but if you really want wrecks Little Cayman is better .....
Chance of big fish in Cayman Islands
YES!!! Large pelagics are see most dives - Hammerheads come into shallow waters May time for breeding ...........
      Coral quality in Cayman Islands
Hard and soft corals of good quality, esp at depth. Hurricane Ivan took it's toll, but that is 4 yrs ago and things are almsot back to pre- Ivan conditions.
Best time to dive in Cayman Islands
All year destination for diving; water is warm and calm generally, altho winter months can suffer from Nor Wester's with rough water for a few days only.
What to take to Cayman Islands
Nothing fancy required - just your dive gear (of course!!), some smart casual wear for evening dining, and your $'s. Plenty of shops selling dive gear and general items etc so don't panic you can buy what you have forgotten.
Virtually no insects (island sprayed for Mossie's) so only the highly sensitive need insect repellants, you can drink the tap water, tummy upsets very rare due to excellent standard of hygiene (Egypt take note!)

Cayman Brac
We went to Cayman Brac in March 2005 and stayed at Divi Tiara. The dive shop was really good--they let you know exactly which boat you were assigned to and when to be there. If you had any special requests as far as dive shops, they tried to accomo...
