      Overall summary of Maldives
Dozens of islands are now tourist sites. Each island is normally occupied by one hotel. The choice of hotels/resorts/islands ranges from the average, to the relaxed, to the downright luxurious.
Temperatures are generally in the low 30s by day, upper 20s by night, pretty well year round. Rainy season is from June to September, when there are large, slow-moving tropical downpours.
      How to get to Maldives
      Top travel tips for Maldives
It's a Muslim country, so don't try to bring alcohol in - it will be confiscated. Once there, the resorts have alcohol.
Most resorts are priced in US$, with a few in €. There is no need to change money into the local Rufiyah.
What's the diving like in Maldives
Powerful currents mean drift dives - some of them very high speed ! Water temperature usually 29 degrees at 30m (max depth allowed by the state).
Generally, each hotel/resort occupies one island, with the dive concession having the monopoly on diving from the island. Each island has its own dive sites, normally shared with adjacent islands, but these are rarely crowded. Black tip reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleon wrasse, turtles and mantas are commonly found in season.

Chance of big fish in Maldives
Excellent. Mantas, big tuna, white-tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, leopard sharks, eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse. Big stingrays. Whale sharks would stay well outside the atolls, in the deep ocean.
      Coral quality in Maldives
The coral was quite badly bleached in the last big El Niño event, but it is slowly recovering. The best colours are the soft corals, vivid white and turquoise under the many overhangs. Some more enlightened hotels/islands now employ their own marine biologist.
Best time to dive in Maldives
Pretty well all year round. Manta season is July-September in S. Atoll (and probably the whole of the Maldives), when the mantas come in to the cleaning stations. There are many 'Manta Points' throughout the Maldives. The water is at its clearest in January, and quite soupy in the rainy season (June-September).
      What to take to Maldives
As much of your own kit as you can, as you will generally be charged per hired piece per dive (as in many parts of the world). A wetsuit isn't necessary for the water temperature, but is highly advisable for protection from coral scratches.

Big Blue Planet knows about the following locations in Maldives:

Addoo Atoll
It may not be the easiest place in the world to get to, but, it's worth every second of it. You have to fly into Male and then catch an internal flight to the old RAF base at Gan. We stayed at the Equator Village when we went. It's not this Ritz b...
