Overall summary of Canaries
The Canaries are a 7 island archipelago located just off the coast of Africa that belong to Spain but are autonomous. They are part of the larger Macaronesia group of Islands (madeira, Azores, Cape Verde, and Salvages) which are all volcanic in nature. The Canary Islands are a well known tourist destination with over 10 million tourists a year. Most are content to sit on the beach and enjoy the climate of their package holiday but there is also good diving on the different islands. The volcanic nature of the islands means that the scenery underwater is far from dull. Also the corals you can expect to see are different to those encountered in the Mediterranean. There are 4 main islands for diving: Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Teneriffe, and Fuerteventura. And then the three smaller ones of El Hierro, La Palma, and La Gomera. Teneriffe is famous for it's ray dives, Lanzarote has it's night dive on the old harbour wall, Fuerteventura has it's own protected marine reserve near Lobos Island to the north, and Gran Canaria has the El Cabron Marine reserve on the east coast. In the larger islands, the density of tourists mean that getting into the water is not going to be a problem! There are loads of dive centres in each resort area vying for customers. Use the reviews on this site to find well regarded ones before you turn up or take a careful look at their facilities. Because of the competition, this can be a value for money location to get trained, but make sure you will simply not be rushed through the program. As well as the diving there is also lots to do out of the water, and this makes the islands a good choice for a holiday diving destination near to Europe.
