Kalkan in Turkey Determined in 2010 to be the wreck of the Sakarya and not the Duchess of York. It lies in 3 diveable pieces. The shallow part lies on the western side of the reef starting at 14m and the stern at 26m. usually dusky, wreck and mottled groupers around the wreck. Plenty of damselfish too. On the deeper eastern side are another 2 parts of the wreck. The first at around 30m and if you head due east from there you hit the next part at 46m down to 62m, usually fairy basslets inside the wreck here. As ever there is a chance to see turtles around the reef. Beware the thousands of urchins covering the top of the reef and also the golden sea fern. Tucked in the rocks are starfish, octopus and beadlet anemones.

Kalkan in Turkey Named after the 2m stockless anchor and stud-link chain wrapped around the top of the reef. Top of the reef is at 17m dropping off markedly on the northern side. Slipper lobsters, octopus, groupers along with aeolids just some of the things to see.

Kalkan in Turkey If you don't mind hunting in between rocks then there's lots to find here, beadlet anemones, opossom shrimps, moray eels, sea cucumbers, aeolids and sometimes the odd loggerhead turtle amongst other stuff. Small swim through down at 30m if you follow the wall around to the south. Nice easy area under the boat at 6-7m to safety stop and keep on checking in holes.

Canyon and Dimitri wreck in Turkey Anchoring is just north of the small islands on a fixed mooring. From here swim out south through the shallow gorge, can be current here, and drop of the edge. dirctly below you should be a canyon leading into a large cave so take a torch. Swimming out of the canyon keep to the right hand wall and this will bring you to the wreck of the Dimitri, sank in 1968 during a storm, carrying cotton. Top of the wreck is at around 23m the bottom around 40m. Not much left to swim through. Seen some big dusky groupers under the wreck. Usually see picarels around the surrounding rocks.

Afkule (Aladdin's cave) and Hamam (Turkish bath) in Turkey 1 of Fethiye's best dive sites but great buoyancy is a must. Be careful not to get too near the sides in Afkule cave so as not to damage what coral is left. The big surprise at the end is another cave but this 1 open at the top. Make sure you do a safety stop before surfing here.

Aquarium reef in Turkey Great for barracuda, morays, two banded sea bream. Octopus, squid, clams, shrimps, pufferfish. Don't miss this site, one of Fethiye's best.

Mexican hat in Turkey A great dive and depending on your air consumption, 2 or 3 caves. The first cave is at 25m inside good buoyancy is required so as not to disturb the silty bottom. Inside are thousands of unicorn shrimps, in a small pocket up to 18m level. Exit, left and go up to 10m and 100m across the bay to where there are lots of large rocks, behind these is cave 2, like a tunnel it has a large entrance and extends back about 90m, it is 3-4m wide for almost all it's length. Fresh water at the back makes it very cold. Exiting again turn left and through and under a large rock, keep going keeping the wall to your left and eventually you hit cave 3. This is also large and has some interesting cold water pockets inside. Spotted some umbrella snails inside cave 2.

Kalkan in Turkey Entry is at the end of Snake island and hold on to your weight belt as it drops off to 80m here. As you drop in there are lots of cup corals in the overhanging wall. Fairy Basslets (Anthias anthias) also along the first part of the wall at around 20/25m. The remains of an old lighthouse greet you as you go along further. Have seen many a variable seaslug (Hypselodoris picta) also in this area.

Kalkan in Turkey Nice dive site for the experienced diver because of the current. Stingrays and turtles if you are lucky. Cup corals and anemones in amongst the rocks. Not a common dive spot but a nice 1.

Sarayalar (Yellow stones) in Turkey The stones falling off the nearby cliffs have produced many swim throughs to navigate through. There is 1 down at about 30m with unicorn shrimps, the others are all at 20m or above, the longest being 4m at most and exits are always visible. Good buoyancy control is a help here. After the tunnels there is a swim back into the bay. Lots of holes for stuff to hide in so take a light anyway. Striped mullet, rainbow and ornate wrasse as well as damselfish around the bay. Digging in the sand may produce heart urchins and rock shrimps.

Kalkan in Turkey Kalkan Dive centre is a small friendy outfit run by Altan and his very able assistants. The dive boat leaves at 9.30 and returns by 12.30/1 after 2 dives so you can have the rest of the day with your family. Kalamar bay next to the dive centre is where you will find the largest variety of fish and crutaceans. Ask Mark about the sealife, he can tell you just about all there is to see there.

Kalkan in Turkey For only the most experienced diver due to the sometimes strong currents. Anchoring at the end of Snake island you head down the anchor line and drop off the top of the reef and head along the wall. Cup and pillow corals on the wall. If you are lucky turtles and big jacks.
Date posted: 18-Apr-2012 06:44
Kalkan in Turkey Named after the rocks on the nearby coast. The reef is usually teeming with damselfish and rainbow wrasse. Top of the reef is around 12m dropping off on the west side to a flat sandy/rocky 25m. Triggerfish and groupers are around also greater amberjacks. Coming off the reef at a rightangle is what appears to be a road and near to the reef there is a small swim through about 6m long, no torch needed.

Kalkan in Turkey Usually a current running across the reef but not normally that strong. Top of reef is at 15m and depending on the current, determines your route. Lots of overhangs on top of the reef to search around for starfish, featherstars and morays. Purple flabellinas (Aeolids) also. If you are lucky then turtles and common stingrays.

Kalkan in Turkey Kalamar is Turkish for squid and with a name like kalamar bay what would you expect but squid. September is a good time to spot them around the dive centre hunting for sand smelt.

Dalyan bay in Turkey If you want to learn to dive in Fethiye then this is probably the place where you will take that first step. The back of the bay is quite shallow allowing you to stand waist deep at first, gradually sloping off. If you look at the dive location on the map you can see several company's boats there. Because of all the boats and lots of try divers, there are plenty of fish around waiting to be fed. Watch out for the lone barracuda too. There used to be lots of octopus around the bay at one time. Following either wall out will get you some depth easily to 30m.

Kalkan in Turkey Good for newly qualified divers and if the wind is busy from the south or east. Lots of old greek and roman amphora in the back of the bay. The wall is nice to swim along if not too lively. Small cave at the end at 12m but not a deep 1.
Date posted: 18-Apr-2012 13:58
Kalkan in Turkey Not usually dived due to it's distance from Kalkan but has lots of holes in between the rocks to search under. beware going past the north or southern ends of the island due to some strong currents. Chance to see rays and turtles.
Date posted: 18-Apr-2012 14:24
Kalkan in Turkey A fairly easy dive site usually plenty of aeolids around. Clams, shrimps and heart urchins hidden in the sand. If the wind starts blowing from the south then easy to head into frenk bay to make an exit.
