Pembroke in England & Wales We had some great shore dives from St Brides and Martins Heaven. The vis was spectacular and conditions were ideal - a real gem especially how crap the 2008 summer was. Lots of Spider crabs and Lesser spotted Dogfish/Small Spotted Catsharks. We'll be going back again next year to do some more diving here and around Skomer.

Brother Islands Liveaboard in Egypt One fellow diver described the Brothers as follows 'Diving the Brother Islands is like arriving late at a really expensive party. The setting and decorations are amazing, but the only action that's left is the waiters stacking up chairs and clearing tables'. I must admit that both little and big brother were excellent dive sites, full of colour and lots of reef life, but where were the pelagics? We didn't see anything larger than a Naploean wrasse the whole time we were there. Unlucky? Maybe, but considering their world class reputation I was somewhat disappointed.

Plymouth in England & Wales Hmmmm Plymouth in March. Well it was cold, windy and rained all the time, however we did have one exceptional day of vis, the like I've never seen before in UK waters.

Aliwal Shoal in South Africa We spent a week diving with African Watersports doing the bluewater Tiger shark dive. I've dived with lots of sharks all over the world, but nothing prepared me for being literally face to face with up to 10 large Tiger sharks at once. It was one of the most terrifying and yet amazing experiences of my life. Sadly 8 Tiger sharks were illegally poached the week after we left. It just goes to show who really needs to fear who. These dives are only for the brave and/or stupid and for divers with lots of experience of shark diving. Having said that you'll never do a dive like this anywhere else in the world.

Crystal River in United States (south) I was shocked to see how badly the conditions at Crystal River had deteriorated since I had last visited 5 years previously. Invasive weeds were everywhere, houses had been built all around the springs on every spare bit of land and the combination of the two had made the water quality plummet. Crystal River is no longer 'crystal'. If it was being named right now it would be probably be called muddy pool. To top everything else off the operators seemed to show no consideration for the Manatees. Even the so called good operators were throwing punter after punter into the water even when there was clearly already too many people there. It was sad, truly sad.

Florida Springs in United States (south) Rainbow River is a nice drift dive, although if you get dropped off near the spring head it is a long dive as it took us nearly 2 hours to get back to the dock. The top of the river near the springs was definitely the best vis and it got a bit cloudy the further down we went. Lots of ups and downs, sometimes you had to snorkel over the reeds before you found deeper water again. Look out for Alligators! :)

Lundy Island in England & Wales Lundy is one of the best UK dives you can do. We didn't have as many seal encounters as some of the reports I've read in the past, but the seals were definitely there on every dive. You can certainly see the benefits the No Take Zone has had on this site. Lets hope the White Paper will bring about changes to the way we manage our marine environment around the UK and we can then hopefully look forward to more locations recovering like this in the future.

gaansbai in South Africa Coming face to face with a Gt White was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We had 14 different sharks on the first day and then 12 on the next. Unfortunately the weather blew out the remainder of our trip, but we'll definately find a way to get back here again one day! I'd recommend Great White Projects - they really look after you.

Sipadan in Malaysia I don't think you truly realise just how good Sipadan is until you have left the place and had time for it all to sink in. At times I was like a child in a sweet shop - I literally didn't know where to look next - it was just non stop action. Truly a paradise for divers. On our last dive we just stayed shallow and hung around the reef top between 4-6m. We saw over 40 turtles on that one dive. At one point I could see 12 at once. Amazing.

Kapalai in Malaysia Kapalai is a great muck diving location. We saw many weird and wonderful critters that we'd never come across before. The highlight of Kapalai Diving was the sunset dive on the house reef searching for Mandarin fish and of course you have 2 boat dives a day to Sipadan. Could you want for anything more? :)

Balicasag Island in Philippines We stayed at Alona Beach and dived all around the area for a week. It was certainly nice diving and I'm glad we went, but I can't see us going back again in the future.

Malapascua in Philippines Ahhh Malapascua. We stayed at Exotic and it was a great choice. Very relaxed, but a very professionally run operation. Although Monad far from the most attractive dive site, the chance of seeing Thresher Sharks makes it a must do. We had Mantas there 3 days running and then on the last day we were lucky enough to have a close encounter with a Thresher. I think the sharks are always there, but the vis is not always great, so some times you literally just can't see them. Great place.

Alona Beach in Philippines We personally didn't like Alona Beach. It could have been the time of year, our hotel or just a combination of both. We loved the diving though. Very good macro on nearby sites and some nice wall and pelgaics off of Balicasag.

Alona Beach in Philippines We personally didn't like Alona Beach. It could have been the time of year, our hotel or just a combination of both. We loved the diving though. Very good macro on nearby sites and some nice wall and pelgaics off of Balicasag. A sign of the times I guess but our dive guide told us that he hadn't seen a shark for over a year. Sad, really, really sad to hear that.

Cabilao in Philippines Nice diving here with both macro and pelagic action. We were traveling through and did a dive on the way so we didn't stay in the area long enough to say anything about that.

Northern Red Sea Liveaboard in Egypt The wind made it a bit cold a times, but the water was nice and warm. Great diving! and the Thistlegorm must be one of the best dives ever WOW!

Lizard in England & Wales Porthkerris is a nice shore dive with the option of going out in the RIB to the mannacles. A nice UK dive location and we'll be back again for sure.

Torquay Riviera in England & Wales Babbacombe Bay is a nice sheltered bay where you can still dive when the weather blows you out from a boat dive! Apparently there are lots of cuttlefish to be seen in early summer, although we were there a bit late for that.

Nassau in Bahamas We stayed at Sandals over the Christmas and New Year break and had a fantastic time. The diving was included within the all inclusive package so it was fantastic value. They launch from the pier off the hotels beach so there was no travelling to and from a dive center. The staff of the dive center were very good - as good as I have ever seen anywhere. The diving itself was very different from what I have experienced before, but we really enjoyed it. The walls were spectacular dropping off to literally thousands of feet below you. We didn't go on a shark feeding dive ourselves but we did dive the site during non feeding times. There were plenty of sharks around and it was great to see so many of them. At one point we counted 15 of them circling us :) The wrecks were good and I really enjoyed the Shipyward (3 wrecks) and the Mahoney which had been blasted to bits, but was a haven for huge shoals of snapper and lots more. Would I go back? Probably not as there is a whole wide world out there to explore, but it was definately a great place to visit and I'm glad we went.

Koh Phi Phi in Thailand We went in the off season but still had a great time with some excellent diving, although the visibility was normally always below 10m. Purple Rock and Red Rock were the most stunning dive sites - they truly deserve their reputation. The bad side of Thai diving is the Health and Safety awareness of some operators. Being left in the middle of the ocean for 45mins finning like mad into a strong current to stay in sight of the boat while the captain and his mate are not on lookout as they are Squid Fishing is NOT good!! Also the locals continue to fish commercially around the Phi Phi Islands, so be prepared to see fish cages with lots of fish trapped in them. The operator I would recommend on Phi Phi is Phi Phi Dive Village who are located at the Phi Phi Island Village resort. If you don't stay there then you have to take pot luck with the Tonsai Bay operators. The only one we dived with we had the 45min incident, so I'm sorry if I'm painting them all black with the same brush.

Koh Samui in Thailand The good dive sites are all up around Koh Tao. The only thing I will ever truly remember about this trip was diving at Chumpon when we saw a..... WHALESHARK !!!! Oh my god it was amazing and totally unexpected. If you are hardcore into diving stay on Koh Tao as the boat travel from Samui is a minimum 3-4 hour round trip.

Looe in England & Wales Looe is a great cornish seaside town with plenty to see and do. It has some really good diving locally and is within easy reach of the Scylla, James Eagan Layne and lots more. Great for a long weekend visit - we'll certainly be going back again.

Lhaviyani Atoll in Maldives We stayed on Kuredu Island and had a fantastic time. Not even the Tsunami hitting dampened our spirits and it's testiment to the staff of the island that they coped with this emergency in such a capable manner. It's a top place to go and hopefully we'll get back there one day.

Murcia in Spain The shore and boat diving around Cabo de Palos is not bad at all for the Med. We've dived there in Feb, July, August and November and always had fun. Definately a good place to go for a short weekend break or even a 2 week summer holiday.

Key Largo in United States (south) We stayed on Marathon and the best dive site in the area was definately Sombrero Reef. We did try to dive the Thunderbolt, but couldn't actually find the underwater buoy that marks her spot despite 3 or 4 possible GPS co-ords(!) so we had to give up. Overall it was a nice trip.

Crystal River in United States (south) The diving around the Crystal Springs area is fantastic. Vis to die for and in the winter months especially you are almost guaranteed to see some Manatees. Great trip!
